) with more than $620 million in the Mega Millions jackpot and the Powerball jackpot, lottery fever is at its highest level. However, your odds of winning Mega Millions are only 1 in 302.6 million. Is it possible to win both lotteries? According to CNBC, 88 is more like 1 in a quadrillion.

Even with small odds of winning, many of us can’t resist throwing in even more money in hopes of a big win. Why do we keep trying?

On the one hand, at some level, we all believe that money buys happiness. A recent Swedish study found that winning the lottery (as opposed to losing) leads to greater life satisfaction – although it didn’t change the winners’ daily happiness). Unsurprisingly, those who can play the least are more likely to spend money to get into the game. A study published in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making found that when people feel subjectively poor, they buy more lottery tickets. A 1999 Duke University study found that Virginians making between $25,000 and $50,000 a year spent more than $91 million on lottery tickets, those making more than $50,000 about $70 million, and those making $15,000 about $15,000. $25k spent $35m.
Timothy Fong, MD, professor of psychiatry at UCLA’s Semal Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and co-director of UCLA’s Gambling Research Program, says the discrepancy may be due to access. For example, lottery tickets are sold at liquor stores, which are more common in low-income areas. Fang cautions against the oft-repeated phrase, “The lottery is a tax on people with bad math skills.” He attributes it to class. “There’s no truth to that,” says Fang.
According to a 2016 Gallup poll, half of Americans reported buying a lottery ticket in the past year.
Since the 1960s, states have legalized lotteries to raise money. David G. Schwartz, Ph.D., director of the Center for Gaming Studies and professor in the history department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, says that at first, lotteries were not advertised and drawings were rarely held. But in the 1970s, New Jersey switched to daily, easily accessible maps, and as revenues rose quickly, other states quickly adopted the same model, Schwartz says.

“At first, a million-dollar jackpot was considered big news, but over time, players became less enamored with the possibility of winning a few million dollars,” he explains. Today’s Giant Jackpots Established multi-state lotteries in the late 1980s that can award jackpots of more than $1 billion. The more states join a particular lottery, the more people play and the bigger the jackpot – hence the mega millions and mighty Powerball.
Fang says that what we really buy into is the fantasy that we can win, not the belief that we will. “Americans love madness,” he says. “We love spectacular displays and big events. If you think about it, it’s not necessarily queuing up to buy lottery tickets, but people do it because they want to be part of the spectacle. It’s a cultural thing.”
“Most people don’t think you can become addicted to the lottery, but it can be a form of gambling addiction,” Fang explains. “The lottery is the strictest definition of gambling and one of the primary forms of legalized gambling in the United States. It is highly regulated and heavily monitored, but at the end of the day, gambling involves risking something valuable. In doing so, there is no difference between playing the lottery and playing blackjack.”
Fang notes that tickets are available every day of the week and are relatively cheap, so people with gambling disorders can get big jackpots. “The hallmark of any addiction is the persistence of behavior despite harmful consequences. Like any other addiction, lottery addicts lose time, money, productivity, and continue to do so despite financial damage or the inability to perform their work,” says Fang.
Scratch Offs To Be Pulled After Top Prizes Won
As with any medical condition, people with suspected gambling addiction should seek treatment. “These are mental illnesses that are associated with depression and anxiety,” Fang says. “If you are concerned about this or think you have a problem, you should contact health services. There is usually a phone number on the back of the lottery ticket to call for help.”
For us, our two dollars will only buy us the fantasy of winning—which is absolutely anyone’s forced fantasy.

An analysis of 2011 Idaho Lottery Commission financial data showed that 19.4 percent of lottery ticket sales came from within Utah’s borders, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Alexis Daniels, manager of Top Stop Chevron in Malad, Idaho, says 99 percent of the store’s lottery tickets are sold to Utahns. Top Stop is Idaho’s best-selling lottery — particularly buoyed by jackpot drawings like last week’s record-breaking $656 million Mega Millions.
“I want to thank all the people from Utah who come out to buy tickets,” Daniels said.
Data shows that Utahns are significantly less likely to play scratch cards and bulltops. Shops at the border sold 6 percent of government scratch cards and 3 percent of tabs. Combined with all lottery games, Border Stores generated 10.5 percent of the Idaho Lottery’s revenue.
The registration jackpot drew residents of many non-lottery states to the nearest retail outlets they could find. A store across the state line in California, in the border town of Brim, Nevada, sold more than 200,000 tickets on a record drawing day.

In the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the New York Lottery allocated $3.38 billion to support education in New York State. Revenue from the New York City Lottery is distributed to local school districts using the same formula used to distribute other state education aid. It takes into account both school district size and income level; Larger, lower-income school districts receive a disproportionately larger share of lottery funds.
