The full name BET has nothing to do with gambling and stands for Black Television Entertainment. This is a paid channel with exclusive content targeting African Americans. It was founded by philanthropist, media mogul and America’s first black billionaire, Robert Louis Johnson. He left his main job to create a cable network for people of his ethnic-racial group. The entrepreneur later sold the company to media company Viacom, which catapulted him to fame and success, making him one of the richest people in the United States.

BET debuted in 1980, but didn’t become a full-fledged channel until 1983. It was a short block of programming that featured sitcoms with black characters and music videos by African-American artists for the first three years. Despite its limited airtime, the Black Entertainment Television network is on par with other organizations. Even then, it had its own recognizable symbol, which became the basis of all subsequent logos.

The graphic design was created by Cheryl D. Holmes Miller, who supports racial and gender equality in design. She believed that black professionals had a huge advantage over whites: they could execute orders for people of all ethnicities. Because of this, Cheryl was passionate about designing logos for African American owned businesses. By the way, he was white, unlike his father and many of his relatives.

In the 1980s, a woman founded the studio Cheryl D. Miller Design Inc. founded and built a corporate identity for Fortune 500 companies, including BET. So many symbols of this channel deserve.

In 1980, Robert Louis Johnson launched a cable network with the long-awaited title: Black Entertainment Television. This phrase was featured on the logo (below, in small letters) and completed with the abbreviation “BET” (above, in large letters). On the left side was the original symbol of a black five-pointed star and a stylized “B” in white.

The logo design changed in 1989. The company removed its full name and combined the abbreviation with the letter “B”. An unusual stylization replaced the standard serif: the “B” looked like two joined semicircles and was painted black, while the “E” was replaced by three wide horizontal lines, one of which was in the form of a furniture “T” stick . . The star is white and has a black outline with jagged edges.

In 2001, Robert Johnson sold his business to media conglomerate Viacom and became a $3 billion fortune. As a result, BET lost its status as a black channel, but kept its logo. The designers only slightly adjusted the shape of the letters and introduced the star. The lines are softer and the lower right corner is rounded with a “T”.

After Johnson resigned, Debra L. Lee assumed the leadership position. The personnel change coincided with Black Entertainment Television’s 25th anniversary, so the network not only has a new CEO, but also a completely different logo. The concept is old, not to mention its implementation. In this version, the star was not on the left inside the “B” but on the right on a blank white background. At the same time, its outline became much wider.

The font got a more legible look: at least the designers finished the letters “B”, “E” and “T” with missing elements. It is a collaboration between Click 3X and Push Creative.

In 2011, the star was black like the classic version used in 1980-1989. The design of the abbreviation has not changed: the letters, as before, are connected to each other and look unusual.

The BET logo is the result of the work of Cheryl D. Holmes Miller. True, the modern version appeared after a small version, in which designers from Click 3X and Push Creative participated. They took the basics (the five-pointed star and abbreviated channel name), presented them in a whole new light.

The type combines corners and curves – two opposites that together create the effect of movement. In this case, the upper right corner of the star-shaped “T” connects the abbreviation and the graphic symbol. The font is unlike any other – the designers used grotesque modification of the font.

The main color is black, which makes a lot of sense given the direction of the channel. White on the background creates just the necessary contrast.

This is the first logo that has been changed as the previous versions consisted of single letters and is now two lines. Above are the first two letters (BE), below – the third (T) with a five-pointed star. Unlike previous years, the modern version is written in a geometric font. As a young black man, part of me is glad that BET exists, while another part of me is critical of how Black Entertainment Television seriously represents my community. That goes double for my thoughts on Tyler Perry, the prolific African-American writer who ended his TV partnership with Oprah to create the new video streaming service BET+. Even with my thoughts on its role in culture, BET+ left me with mixed feelings. While it has some of the most popular Black movies and shows on ViacomCBS, it is expensive and lacks basic functionality.
