Lorcan Tucker – On an overcast afternoon in Malahide last September, Leinster Lightning found themselves in murky waters at 11/2 after chasing 240 against the Northern Knights in the Cricket Ireland Inter-Provincial Limited Over Cup. Enter Lorcan Tucker.
He followed that up with a run-ball 83, an exhibition of poise and fluidity to extend his side’s unbeaten run.

On Monday (January 18), the situation became all too familiar in Abu Dhabi. Having lost Paul Stirling, Kevin O’Brien and captain Andrew Palbirnie on the cheap at 10/3, it’s an opportunity waiting to present itself.

Tucker was happy to play second fiddle the entire time, along with Harry Tecter, who was too active to tackle the breaks. This took him 43 balls to reach double figures. Continue the excitement of Test cricket in Galle and Brisbane on the same day. Oh the strange demands of an hour in one day cricket…

Anyone who has followed the Dubliner’s career will attest that it has not been an empty journey. Cricket Leinster reporter Peter Boyd, from Fingal, who saw the tongue in September, acknowledged Tucker’s brilliance on the day, but also stressed the importance of playing with a sense of independence.
‘Lorgan needed some runs today and I was pleased to see him personally score some runs in difficult conditions. “He is a very dangerous batsman, the shackles are released and he bats freely,” Boyd said.

. On 11/2 & 10/3, he can bat freely as the top order fails and not much is expected from the innings, if that makes sense. He is a very intelligent young man who can sometimes overthink things. The freedom to play one’s own game often helps relieve stress.
In a 124-ball 72-run partnership, Tucker dropped the anchor to face the Storm, his 68-ball 31 against the West Indies at the Kensington Oval in Barbados a year ago. It’s not so much about entrepreneurial scenarios, but about the ability to hang in there to regain some semblance of control.

In a phase that mirrored scenes from the previous innings, he appeared tentative against Rohan Mustafa’s right-arm darts and Waheed Ahmed’s smooth swing on a sluggish pitch. He lifted leg-spinner Karthik Meiyappa into the side, but the shots seemed born of desperation rather than hope.
Lorcan Tucker Career Profile
Tucker entered at a point when he was very much in control, shortly after Tector was eliminated by reverse sweeping Mustafa. He swept for boundaries ignoring Meiyappan’s back half-pains. It was no longer agricultural, but began to show a positive attitude.
A more authoritative shot came against captain Ahmed Raza after seven overs. Absorbed in raising the front, he was dismissed for 42 off 81 balls after two balls. His longest international knock in terms of balls faced.

As Ireland finished with 228 on the board, his level of play paled in comparison to the more aggressive contributions of the duo of Simi Singh (53*) and Curtis Camper. However, one should not ignore the underrated partnership that was instrumental in laying a strong foundation.

With Tucker, there have been more flashes of brilliance behind the sticks than Willow, but his win yesterday reaffirmed the confidence the coaches have shown in him despite averaging 16.7 from eleven games.
However, it was an archaic half-century in Belfast against Zimbabwe that is more akin to the Leinster chase than the knock this week against the UAE. In his fourth match, he scored a blistering 56 in the death overs, albeit very judiciously, sandwiched between James McCullum’s 73 and Tim Murdoch’s five. But that was his only notable knock in terms of marks.
So it begged the question of what progress Tucker made over Gary Wilson, who played 105 ODIs during last summer’s tour of England. Perhaps, the 32-year-old average is not nearly as attractive as 23. You can’t make a convincing argument against bleeding a youngster with the World Cup two years away.

Tucker, who made his home debut against England in 2019, has enjoyed a decent run in the team not only because of the promise he brings, but also because of the lack of reliable options. Earlier that year, Stuart Poynter had played in all three formats in India’s tour against Afghanistan, but his poor performances combined with a poor ODI career average of 13.2 did not inspire the selectors for a longer Test.
Casting the net further, the likes of Stephen Doheny and Neil Rock could push Tucker up a spot in the coming years. The latter is currently part of Ireland’s first senior tour.
However, it would be unwise to walk away at this stage as tough challenges await against the Afghans this week. Because their spinners will be difficult to predict on a similarly slow pitch. No taint is unforgivable with the precious ICC Cricket World Cup Super League points.
Despite being robbed of half the promised playing time, the depth of the select squad on display on Monday will have delighted Palbirni no end in his next job. The day may belong to his Leinster team-mates Camper and Simi Singh, but memories of Monday afternoon will warm Tucker the most.
