Play India Play India – NEW DELHI — OK Play India Ltd., a toy maker and plastics processor, is spending nearly $4 million to launch what it says is the first local rotary electric rickshaw.

The New Delhi-based company plans to launch its e-rickshaws next month at a local trade show and sees an opportunity to make significant inroads into India’s growing market.

“We have invested approximately INR 15 million (US$3.75 million) in the design, development, validation and construction of the platform for the product,” said managing director Rajan Handa. The company will manufacture the vehicles at its factories in Gurgaon near Delhi and Ranipet near Chennai.

He said OK Play, which mainly manufactures plastic toys, also plans to open additional rickshaw factories in the west and east of the country.

“This item is not easy to transport,” Handa said. “Therefore, as part of our customer outreach, we are planning two more factories in Pune and Kolkata by mid-2016.”

The company currently estimates that there are around 350,000 e-rickshaws on the streets of major Indian cities such as Delhi and Kolkata, but most of them are imported from China and finally assembled in India. Handa said OK Play wants to market its locally made e-rickshaw called ‘Raaja’.

“Raaja [has] 94 parts, 91 parts are made by us, [and] probably in the next quarter we will gain experience in making the other three parts like [the engine],” he said.

Handa said OK Play is preparing for new regulations in India, which after January 1 will require all e-rickshaws to meet the requirements of the International Center for Automotive Technology of India.

The Raaja weighs 660 pounds, and the four-seat version has a payload of 1,500 pounds. It can travel up to 62 miles on a single charge and has a top speed of 15 miles per hour.

The company, which is publicly traded on the Mumbai Stock Exchange, said it has the capacity to manufacture 1,000 e-rickshaws per day at its existing facilities. It plans to follow up its current four-seater version with a two-seater model.
